Oils
Oils really enhance the grain of the wood, giving a more natural feel and appearance. They are less likely to show scratches unlike a lacquer finish and it is possible to do small repairs. These are available in matt, satin and gloss finishes in a variety of colours.
Lacquers
Lacquers are available in domestic and commercial ranges and are great for high traffic areas as the finish is harder wearing and forms a protective layer from dirt and spillages. But if they do damage such as scratches it is harder to do a small repairs. Lacquers are available with a matt, silk matt or gloss finish.
Filling
If your wood floor has small gaps we can use a mix of resin and clean dust from the sanding process. This is then spread over the floor and once dried re-sanded to leave a smooth finish. We feel this is the best method to get a good colour match. However on pine floors the resin method isn't recommended because it can crack and fall through the gaps. On larger gaps we suggest filling with coloured mastic or wood splines.
Daily Maintenance
Regular sweeping of floors is a must as grit carried in from shoes will gradually sand the surface of your finish, and will dramatically shorten the lifespan of your floor. Store bought cleaners should be avoided as they may be too harsh and will eat away at the finish. So we recommend you use a suitable cleaner for you floor type, if unsure please ask.
When you floor is showing wear
Both oil and lacquered floors may need a light sand a re-finish after a few years to remove surface marks, depending on the traffic in the areas, and how well they have been maintained. This is easily achieved and at a fraction of the cost of a full sand and re-finish.
